Old Skala

On the south eastern tip of the island, set into the steep mountainside, amongst fragrant scented pine and olive groves, with stunning panoramic views over the Ionian sea towards the island of Zante, lay the ruins of the original village of Skala which was destroyed by the 1953 earthquake.  The people of Skala then relocated to the coast, less than 4 kilometres from the original village and this is now the resort of Skala. In 2006 the area surrounding the ruined village came alive again with painstaking attention to detail and designs that reflect both the villages history and the enviroment, using much of the original stonework.

Old Skala is ideal location for those who want to be close to three fantastic beaches, Skala, Kaminia and Mounda - (where on the latter two, the loggerhead turtles return annually to breed), and to the occasionally lively new resort that shares its name, whilst also being able to enjoy the views and convivial atmosphere of old skalas inviting and friendly taverna.
